TECHNICAL ADVICE - BRAND SPECIFIC
Compiled from comments and suggestions from a number of our clients and our own experience. Valiant Hemi Oil Pump Gears Valiant Cams come with two different diameter oil pump drive gears (on the cam) either 1.830 (+ or - .007) or 1.850 (+ or - .005.)
The American EPC Billet No EP216 has the 1.830 gear and there is a 15 tooth oil pump gear available to suit.
There are also other 15 tooth and 16 tooth gears in the field.
Most original 1.850 diameter cam gears come with a corresponding 16 tooth oil pump gear.
When installing a replacement cam ensure you have the appropriate oil pump gear.
It is also important to check for gear mesh. Some oil pump bodies distort over time, leading to a miss mesh as the pump no longer sits flush. It is recommended that the oil pump drive be assembled with the top off the pump and the gear mesh checked. The pump body "wings" and/or the block may be filed to adjust the mesh to achieve approximately five thou back lash.
Some engine builders regularly drill a 1 mm hole in the oil galley above the oil pump gears to provide direct lubrication.
We hope this information helps you with your Valiant Hemi engine rebuilds.
